Your Total Cost: Tour Price + Coba Gate Fees

Two fees are paid at the Coba gate, in cash, per person: the national entry fee (210 pesos for foreign visitors) and a local community fee (about 120 pesos). Together that is about 330 pesos, or roughly US$18 to US$20. If you want a bike or a tricycle taxi inside the site, that is a small extra rental paid on the spot. So for one adult from Playa del Carmen, the full day is about US$79 + US$18 to 20 at the gate, plus a bike if you want one and tips. The cenote entry and lunch are already in our price. We confirm your exact total on WhatsApp before you pay.

Nohoch Mul Climb on the Coba Tour

Yes. You can climb the Nohoch Mul pyramid at Coba again. It reopened on 8 December 2025 after being closed since 2020, with a new wooden staircase built over the old stone steps. Many websites still say climbing is banned, but that is out of date.

Nohoch Mul is about 42 metres high, the tallest pyramid in the northern Yucatán. The climb follows a few rules: climbing stops at 3:30 pm, people go up in groups of up to 15, and you can stay on top for about 15 minutes. From the top you look out over the jungle in every direction. Our tour reaches the pyramid in the late morning, well before the cut-off. Rules can change, so your guide confirms on the day. Full visitor details are in our Coba ruins guide.

Bike or Tricycle on the Coba Tour

Coba is big. The ruins are spread along old white stone roads called sacbe, and walking from the entrance to Nohoch Mul and back is around 5 to 6 km in the heat. You have three ways to get around:

  • ✓Walk: free and shaded, best if you like walking
  • ✓Rent a bike: the most fun, flat paths, small fee
  • ✓Tricycle taxi: a local driver pedals you, good for kids, older travelers or anyone who wants to save energy for the climb

Your guide walks or rides with you and stops at the Coba Group, the ball court and the carved stone stelae.

Coba Cenote Swim After the Ruins

After the ruins you swim for about 45 minutes in a cenote near Coba, usually Tamcach-Ha or Choo-Ha. These are underground cenotes: you go down wooden stairs into a cave with clear, cool water. We choose the cenote on the day based on crowds. Life jackets are included, so you do not need to be a strong swimmer. Shower before swimming, and skip regular sunscreen in the water.

Coba Tour from Cozumel (Cruise Passengers)

From Cozumel, take the 9:00 am ferry arrival to Playa del Carmen. We meet you at the pier and drive about 1 hour 45 minutes to Coba. You are back at the pier around 5:00 pm. We only book this if your all-aboard time is 6:30 pm or later. If your ship leaves earlier, our Tulum ruins tour is shorter and safer for your timing.

Coba Tour from Merida

Coba is about 3 hours from Merida, so it is a long but easy day. We pick you up at 6:00 am and you are back around 7:30 pm. Few tour companies offer Coba with pickup from Merida.

Who the Coba Ruins Tour Suits

The Coba tour suits people who want jungle, adventure and a pyramid to climb, not just photos. Families like the bikes and tricycles. The climb is steep, so it is not right for people who struggle with stairs, but they can still enjoy the site by tricycle and wait at the bottom. Most of the site is shaded by trees, which makes it cooler than the Tulum ruins.

Private Coba Tour

The private Coba tour costs US$279 for up to 4 people, with your own guide and vehicle. You pick the start time, so you can be at the gate at 8:00 am and climb Nohoch Mul before anyone else. Ask us for larger groups or pickup from Cancun, Cozumel or Merida.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before your pickup, with a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours or no-shows are not refunded. You can change your date for free up to 24 hours before. If we cancel for unsafe weather, you choose a new date or a full refund.

Coba Ruins Tour FAQ

How high is the Coba pyramid, and is the climb scary?

+

Nohoch Mul is about 42 metres (138 feet) high, with around 120 steps. Since December 2025 you climb on a wooden staircase with a handrail built over the old stones, which feels much safer than the old rope. If you do not like heights, you can wait at the bottom. Many people climb only part of the way.

Are there mosquitoes at Coba?

+

Yes, Coba is in the jungle, so bring insect repellent. Use a biodegradable one if you plan to swim, or put it on after the cenote.

Can I pay the Coba gate fees by card?

+

Bring cash in pesos. There are two fees at Coba, and card machines at the gate do not always work. Your guide will tell you the exact amount on the day.

Can I visit Coba and the Tulum ruins on the same day?

+

Yes, but it is a long day and you get less time at each site. This page is our Coba tour. If you want both sites in one day, send us a message on WhatsApp and we will plan it with you.

Is the Coba tour good for kids?

+

Yes. Kids usually love the bikes and the tricycle taxis. Children under 4 ride free and children aged 4 to 11 pay 25% less. Strollers are hard on the dirt paths, so a baby carrier is better.

What happens if it rains at Coba?

+

The trees give shade and some cover, so short rain is fine and the tour goes ahead. The wooden stairs on the pyramid can close for a while in heavy rain. If we cancel for unsafe weather, you choose a new date or a full refund.

Will I be back to my cruise ship on time?

+

The Coba tour from Cozumel is a long day: we meet you at the Playa del Carmen pier at 9:00 am and you are back there about 5:00 pm, then you take the ferry. We only book it if your all-aboard time is 6:30 pm or later. If it is earlier, we will suggest the shorter Tulum ruins tour instead.
