Tulum's weather is tropical savanna: warm to hot every month, humid, and split into a dry season and a rainy season. There is no real winter. The difference between the coolest and hottest month is only about 5°C, but humidity and rain change a lot.
Tulum sits on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in Quintana Roo. Trade winds from the east cool the beach, while the jungle a few kilometres inland feels hotter and stickier. Low, flat limestone means no mountains block storms.

The rainy season in Tulum runs from about June to October, with September and October the wettest months. Rain usually falls as short, heavy afternoon or evening storms, not all-day drizzle. Mornings are often sunny even in the wet months.
Tulum can be hit by hurricanes, but direct hits are rare in any given year. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with the highest risk from mid-August to October. Most summer trips see only tropical rain, not a storm.
Quintana Roo has a well-practised alert system with colour-coded warnings, and hotels follow official instructions. If you travel in hurricane season, buy travel insurance, keep plans flexible and watch the US National Hurricane Center in the week before departure. Whether to book in this season is covered in our best time to visit Tulum guide.
Each month in Tulum has its own mix of heat, rain and crowds. Use these notes with the table above to picture your travel dates.
January is one of the coolest and driest months in Tulum, with sunny days around 28°C and fresh evenings near 19°C. Occasional northern cold fronts (nortes) bring a windy, cloudy day or two and rougher sea.
February brings dry, sunny weather and low humidity. Days reach about 29°C and the sea is calm on most days. It is also one of the busiest months for visitors.
March stays dry but warms up to about 30°C. Spring break and Easter crowds can arrive late in the month. Mornings are pleasant; midday sun at the ruins is strong.
April is hot and dry, often the sunniest month, with highs near 31°C. Humidity starts to rise and the first sargassum seaweed can reach the beaches.
May is hot and humid, around 32°C, with the first short rain showers late in the month. It is the hottest-feeling month before the rains cool things slightly.
June starts the rainy season and the hurricane season (from 1 June). Expect heavy but short afternoon storms, high humidity and highs around 32°C.
July is hot, humid and green, with highs near 32°C. Rain usually comes as brief storms; a short mid-summer dry spell is common. Sargassum is often heavy.
August is usually the hottest month, around 33°C, with humid nights near 24°C. Rain and storm risk rise toward the end of the month.
September is the wettest month and the peak of hurricane season. Many days are still sunny in the morning, but long rainy spells are more likely.
October remains wet with strong storm risk, but the heat eases to about 31°C. Crowds and prices are low. Keep travel plans flexible.
November is a change month: rain drops quickly, humidity falls and days reach a comfortable 29°C. Hurricane season ends on 30 November.
December is dry, sunny and mild, about 28°C by day and 20°C at night. Holiday weeks are busy, and a norte can bring a cooler, windy day.
The sea in Tulum is warm enough to swim every month, from about 26°C (79°F) in winter to 29°C (84°F) in late summer. Sargassum seaweed can reach the beaches mainly between April and September, with big changes from week to week; our Tulum beach guide has more on seaweed.
On heavy sargassum days, inland cenotes stay clear because they are fresh groundwater. Nearby bays protected by reefs, such as Akumal, often stay cleaner; see our Akumal beach and turtle guide for that option.
Weather shapes the best time of day more than the best month. The Tulum ruins have almost no shade, so heat matters most there; cenotes are shaded and pleasant in any weather; beaches depend on wind and seaweed.

Pack light, breathable clothes and strong sun protection for any month in Tulum. Add a light rain jacket from June to October and one warm layer for windy winter evenings.

February in Tulum is warm, sunny and dry, with highs near 29°C (84°F) and lows around 19°C (66°F). Humidity is low and the sea is usually calm, which makes it one of the most comfortable months for the ruins and the beach.
Yes. Tulum is humid all year, but much more from May to October, when humidity often stays above 80% and the heat feels several degrees hotter than the thermometer shows. The dry months from December to April feel noticeably fresher.
Tulum never gets truly cold. The lowest night temperatures are around 17 to 19°C (63 to 66°F) in January and February, usually during a norte cold front. A light sweater or long sleeves are enough for evenings.
Tulum and Cancun share nearly the same climate, because both sit on the same Caribbean coast. Tulum is slightly further from the open Gulf breezes and can feel a little warmer and more humid inland, but monthly patterns are almost identical.
A Tulum forecast showing rain every day in summer usually means short afternoon storms, not all-day rain. Forecasts beyond 3 to 5 days are rough guides only. For tropical storms, check the US National Hurricane Center and Mexico's official weather service close to your dates.
