Your Total Cost: Tour Price + Tulum Park Fee

One cost is not in our price: the government fees for the Tulum ruins and the national park around them. They are paid per person in pesos at the gate and come to about US$15 to US$20. The Gran Cenote entry is already included. So for one adult from Playa del Carmen, your full day costs about US$89 + US$15 to 20 at the gate, plus food and tips if you want them. Tulum Ruins and Cenote Tour Itinerary: Your Day Hour by Hour

The tulum and cenote tour takes about 7 hours from Playa del Carmen, with the ruins first and the swim second. Starting early matters: the Tulum ruins have little shade, so the morning is cooler, and by the time the site gets busy you are on your way to cool water.

  1. 8:00 amPickup at your hotel in Playa del Carmen (other areas: see pickup times below)
  2. 9:00 amArrive at the Tulum ruins, before the midday heat and the biggest crowds
  3. 9:00 to 10:30 amGuided walk of the Tulum ruins, then free time for photos at the sea view
  4. 11:00 amShort drive to Gran Cenote, 10 minutes from the ruins
  5. 11:15 am to 12:30 pmAbout 1 hour swimming and snorkeling at Gran Cenote
  6. 1:00 pmDrive back, with an optional stop for food in Tulum town
  7. about 3:00 pmBack at your Playa del Carmen hotel

Guided Visit to the Tulum Ruins

You spend about 1.5 hours at the Tulum archaeological site: around an hour with your guide, then free time for photos. The walk follows the old city wall to El Castillo on the cliff and the Temple of the Wind God above the beach. The paths are flat, and you cannot climb the buildings. For the full story of the site, see our guided Tulum ruins tour, which spends longer at the ruins and skips the swim.

Swim Time at Gran Cenote

You get about one hour in the water at Gran Cenote, not a quick 15-minute stop. That is enough time to float in the open pool, snorkel through the cave sections and see small fish and turtles that live in the cenote.

Gran Cenote Swim: Who Can Join?

Gran Cenote is a freshwater sinkhole 10 minutes from the Tulum ruins, with clear water, wooden decks and stairs into the pool. It is one of the easier cenotes to swim in, so most groups can join, including people who are not strong swimmers.

Non-Swimmers and Life Jackets

You do not need to be a good swimmer. Life jackets are included, and the cenote has platforms and shallow areas where you can stand or hold the rail. If you do not want to swim at all, you can sit on the deck and watch. The price stays the same, since the entry is included.

Kids and Families

Kids enjoy this tour because the long walk is in the morning and the swim comes after. Children must wear a life jacket in the water. The walk at the ruins is flat but in the sun, so bring a hat and water for small children.

Pickup Times from Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Merida

These are the usual pickup times and approximate return times for this combined ruins-and-cenote day. We confirm your exact hotel time on WhatsApp the day before.

Pickup fromPickup timeBack at
Playa del Carmen8:00 amabout 3:00 pm
Tulum & Riviera Maya8:00 to 8:45 amabout 2:00 to 3:00 pm
Cancun7:00 amabout 4:00 pm
Cozumel (Playa pier)9:00 amabout 3:30 pm at the pier
Merida4:30 amabout 7:30 pm

From Cancun the drive takes about 2 hours each way, so it is a full day. From Merida it is about 4 hours each way, which is a very long day. We only recommend it if you cannot stay a night on the coast.

Tulum Ruins and Cenote Tour from Cozumel (Cruise Passengers)

From Cozumel, you take the ferry to Playa del Carmen (about 45 minutes, and it can be choppy, so sit on the lower deck if you get seasick). We meet you at the pier at 9:00 am and drive about an hour to the ruins. Cruise guests often search for the "Tulum ruins and Mayan cenote" excursion. This is our version, with about an hour in the cenote and a small group. Send us your ship name and all-aboard time before you book, and we will check the day fits with a safe buffer.

Tulum and Cenote Tour vs Going on Your Own

You can visit the Tulum ruins and Gran Cenote on your own. It works best if you are already staying in Tulum and have a car. From Cancun, Playa or Cozumel, the tour is usually easier, because you do not need to sort out buses or taxis between the two sites.

Cancellation, Weather and Booking with a New Local Company

For the ruins and cenote combo, cancel up to 24 hours before pickup for a full refund; cancellations within 24 hours or no-shows are not refunded, but you can reschedule for free before that window. If we cancel for unsafe weather, you choose a new date or a full refund.

Tulum Ruins Trip is a new website, so this combo tour has no reviews from us yet, and we would rather show none than fake them. What you get instead is a clear price before paying, the cancellation policy above in writing, and a real guide contact on WhatsApp throughout your day.

Tulum Ruins and Cenote Tour FAQ

Will I be back to my cruise ship on time?

+

We plan the Tulum ruins and cenote tour from Cozumel around your ship. Send us your ship name and all-aboard time before you book. We meet the 9:00 am ferry at the Playa del Carmen pier and usually have you back at the pier around 3:30 pm. If your all-aboard time leaves less than a 2-hour buffer after the ferry ride, we will tell you honestly and suggest the ruins-only tour instead.

What age can kids join?

+

Any age can join. Children under 4 ride free and children aged 4 to 11 pay 25% less. Kids must wear a life jacket in the cenote, and we have small sizes.

How cold and deep is the water at Gran Cenote?

+

The water at Gran Cenote stays around 25°C (77°F) all year, which feels cool on a hot day. There are shallow areas where you can stand and deeper parts for snorkeling under the rock ceiling.

Can I bring a camera or GoPro?

+

Yes. Phones and waterproof cameras like a GoPro are fine at the ruins and in the cenote. Drones need a special permit at both places, so leave them at the hotel.

Can I wear sunscreen in the cenote?

+

Not regular sunscreen. Cenotes are freshwater, so everyone showers before swimming and lotions are not allowed in the water. Wear biodegradable sunscreen at the ruins, or cover up with a hat and a rash guard.

Can we swim at the beach below the Tulum ruins?

+

Sometimes. The small beach below the ruins can close for turtle nesting or seaweed. Your swim on this tour is at Gran Cenote, so the day still includes a swim when the beach is closed.

What happens if it rains?

+

Short tropical rain is common and the tour usually goes ahead, since you get wet in the cenote anyway. If we cancel for unsafe weather, you choose a new date or a full refund.
